Kirkby Lonsdale

Saturday night gone William and I spent our first night at Bay View which is now the home of our holiday caravan.  We had one heck of a journey getting there with several looong delays on the motorway.  A journey that should’ve taken just over an hour took 3 and a half long hours!

So a stop at the services and a reviving coffee each was very welcome.

We spent a somewhat chilly night in the van – there was frost on the car on Sunday morning but we survived the night with the help of an extra duvet each and neither of us suffered frostbite! The weather has got to warm up soon, hasn’t it?

Anyway, onto Sunday and after a leisurely morning and long walk around Bay View we drove home via Kirkby Lonsdale. Kirkby Lonsdale is a historic market town between the Lakes and the Yorkshire Dales. We have been to this little town before but never explored it in any detail and what a pity that is because it’s a gem of a place.

Spotting the church down a side alley we took a look see.  I’m always drawn to churches and graveyards.  I love to read the inscriptions on the graves.DSC_8726.jpgb

We meandered through the churchyard and followed signs to Ruskin’s View…

… a stunning view over the Lune and surrounding countryside.

Retracing our steps I noticed that much of the graveyard was carpeted in spring flowers, not exactly well-kept but definitely cared for.

Hungry by this time we looked for somewhere to eat.  William spotted this little old bakery shop ..

… with a tea room/restaurant in the back so in we went.  The food was delicious.  Will definitely eat here again.

Like I said this is a very old town with lots of little old lanes to wander down.

Lined with quaint cottages.

This is Devil’s Bridge just outside the town centre.  A popular beauty spot.

This is the view looking down over the other side of the 13th century bridge.  See the people at the arrow point.  They were having a picnic and one day soon I want to have a picnic in that exact spot.

I’m linking to Outdoor Wednesday today over A Southern Daydreamer blog.

I love that winding little area between the jobs and the bridge the best of all.

Do you realize that your everyday life is what would be considered a dream American vacation? Seriously!!

Hi Kathleen, Thank you for your visit yesterday. It is nice to meet you.

What a lovely town to visit. In spite of the cold it sounds like you had a wonderful time. I loved your photos and the quaint places you wondered to around Kirby Londale. A picnic along the river woud be perfect.
