Just One More Ho Ho Ho.

It seems like very old news now but I just want to post this final Christmas instalment.

On Christmas morning William and I visit both our daughter’s homes with gifts for them and the boys.  We are so lucky that both girls live within striking distance and that we able to visit them each in their homes and see our little grandsons all excited with their piles of gifts from Father Christmas.

Charlie loves all things involving knights, Disney and castles so Christmas morning he wasn’t disappointed.

DSC_2086.jpgb

Neither were George and Nicholas who both received hudl tablets and were thrilled with them.  They were three very lucky and very happy little boys.

DSC_2096.jpgb

Christmas dinner is always held at our house.  This year Trev did the honours in the kitchen, very ably I might add, and I relaxed and watched the boys open their stocking.

DSC_2027.jpgb

I hang a stocking up each year at our house for each of the boys and fill them with a variety of little things.  I took a picture for posterity this year.  In years to come I’m hoping that this blog will still be floating around in the clouds somewhere and the boys will read it when they’re all grown up and say “Oh yeah, I ‘d forgotten about those stockings but I remember now!”…. or something like that.

DSC_2100.jpgb

This pic’s a bit blurry I know but I like how Nicholas is showing Charlie that he has a Christmas top on too.  Christmas Day is a long time in the making and once it arrives it’s all go and whizzes by in a flash!  It’s a shame isn’t it?  I wish Christmas morning could last and last.  Wouldn’t that be great for the kids?

DSC_2127_edited-1.jpgb

Our Christmas present to Charlie was this Hot Wires Electronics Kit.  While his parents were both working one day he stayed with us and brought the Hot Wires for him and grandad to play with.  Above you see them both having fun and getting stuck into the first project.

DSC_2133.jpgb

Second project, still going strong…

DSC_2134.jpgb

.. but Charlie seems to be getting a bit fed up of just watching.

DSC_2139.jpgb

Hang on though, that’s better.

DSC_2140.jpgb

A joint effort - much more fun!

IMG_3189.jpgb

So, that’s it for another year but before I sign off just one more thing.  Victoria saw this idea on FaceBook and told me about it.

DSC_2157.jpgb

I think it’s a really nice idea and I have a jar started.  Hopefully it’ll be quite full by the end of the year.

Happy New Year!

It’s Not That I Don’t Like Christmas..

..I do, but, I’m always glad when it’s over.  I can’t be only the one who feels that way, can I?  Anyway, this post is about the days before Christmas.

IMG_3020.jpgb

In the run up Caroline and I had a day shopping at The Trafford Centre and I tasted my first piece of Christmas cake of the season in John Lewis restaurant.

DSC_1776_edited-1.jpgb

Nicholas had a sleepover and naturally pancakes were on the menu for breakfast.

DSC_1783_edited-1.jpgb

He was showing me here how real chefs walk about while they’re making things on the telly.

DSC_1786_edited-1.jpgb

A big moment!  I believe this was the first time I let him have control of the pan over the flame!  Needless to say I was hovering very close.

DSC_1789_edited-1.jpgb2

George came round later in the day.  They’re playing on the iPad in this shot.

DSC_1790_edited-1.jpgb

Looks like some serious stuff going on here.  I love their freckles and the dimples in their chins.

TreeDec.jpgb

On the 14th the tree was decorated.  Grandad always gets the tree down from the loft, erects it and puts the lights on it, then makes himself scarce.  Then the boys come round to help do the decorating.  The boxes of ornaments etc. get unwrapped at breakneck speed and before I can blink the house looks like a bombsite!  It’s always fun though!  When they’ve all gone home I usually spend the next couple of days tweaking things and it all ends up looking the way it should in the end.

IMG_3081_edited-2.jpgb

On the last day of school Charlie took part in a Fancy Dress Parade.  Caroline, a fulltime working mum, got creative and came up with this great little snowman outfit.  Charlie was more than pleased with the way he looked in it.  I took him to school that day and he went in with a spring in his step.  Bless his little cotton socks!ChasMincePies2013b.jpgb

The weekend before Christmas my older daughter, Victoria, and her family were away in Cornwall and the Scilly Isles.  Thereby lies a whole other story and I won’t go into it here but I will say it’s been an emotional few weeks where hopes were raised and dashed, tears flowed and dried and once again life now goes on pretty much as before.   So, while they were away Caroline brought Charlie round to bake mince pies with me.   Things started off with a great big oops! moment then progressed without further mishap.  I love baking with these little boys mainly because they love it so much.

DSC_1889.jpgb

A snap from an early evening walk round the neighbourhood.  Poor little old Muffin doesn’t always want to go for a walk these days but he does need some exercise and a walk around the neighbourhood is just enough.

More Christmas posts to come but they’re for another day…

IMG_3198.jpgb

..I’ve got some socks on the needles and I’m itching to get to them.

Until next time,

What’s Been Going On?

Well, I know I've been away from the blog for a bit longer than usual but with all the preparations for Christmas and other distractions I just haven’t had the time or inclination to sit down in front of the laptop.  However I’m here  now and so without further ado I will attempt to fill in the last couple of weeks with photos and a few words.

DSC_1721_edited-1.jpgb

One Sunday a couple of weekends ago William, Caroline, Charlie and I took a trip over to Bents Garden Centre.  Charlie loved the play area – look at his happy little face!  Their Christmas department was overflowing with goodies of all descriptions.  We spent a happy couple of hours browsing and buying too as it happens…

Our dogs got comfy new beds.  Lucky little canines don’t you think?

IMG_2943.jpgb

Caroline and I seem to be finding time on a regular basis for Starbucks Moments.  On a recent visit we were asked to take part in a coffee tasting.  Free coffee and chocolate?  Yes, please!  A very pleasant experience with two very sweet members of staff serving us.

IMG_2993.jpgb

I’ve been to the cinema again, the old fashioned Picture House in Hebden Bridge.  This time with my sweet friend, Lesley, to see Philomena.  Philomena is based on the true story of an Irish woman’s search for the son she was forced to give up for adoption in Ireland in the 1950s.  A heartbreaking story to say the least.  You can read her story by following this link.  After the cinema Lesley and I found our way to a little cafe for a bite to eat.  We had a lovely time didn’t we, Lesley?

IMG_2965.jpgb

One of the major distractions I’ve had, in a good way, has been my mission to finish the Christmas table topper I started.  My first ever patchwork project.  I was going great guns with it and was sure I’d finish it in time for Christmas but this week I discovered I’d bought the wrong thickness/type of wadding for it and, frustrated I’ve given up on it until the festivities are over when I’ll have more time to spend on it. :-(

SnowmenStarbucksornamentsOf course, Christmas decorations have been distributed about the house.  Here are a couple of my favourite ho ho ho things of the moment.  The boys always come round to help me decorate the house and the tree but those pics are still in the camera.  I’ll post them next time.

IMG_3046.jpgb

George striking a pose in front of the tree for me.  He slept over on Saturday night.  His brother, Nicholas, slept over the night before and Charlie has had a couple of nights here this week.  All good fun and all in a day’s work for this lucky nan.

IMG_3051.jpgb

“Dashing away with the smoothing iron he stole my heart away!”  This little fellow did that 10 years ago.  Saturday afternoon George tried out a new skill.  He’s learning how to do the ironing.  It’s a life skill and boy or girl it’s necessary.

IMG_3022.jpgb

Christmas shopping at the Trafford Centre one day last week was fun with Caroline.  Poor Victoria misses out on a lot of these trips because she works Monday to Friday whereas Caroline gets days off midweek with her job and weekends are family time not dragging the boys round the busy shops time.   The Trafford Centre was buzzing, full of Christmas shoppers but not too hectic that it was unpleasant.  Like I said in the first place it was fun.  That’s Selfridges above.  I loved their honeycomb decorations.  Selfridges always looks good though.

IMG_2953.jpgb

Little Nicky Noo plays for his local football team.  Victoria brought him round after practise one night so that he could show us how professional he looks in his kit.  The football coach has done well for his team and they have sponsorship from both Redrow Homes and McDonalds which means they have a match kit and a training kit.  Lucky lads.

IMG_3066.jpgb

George’s class had a craft morning at school on Wednesday this week and he asked both his mum and I to go in and support him.  Cross stitching a bookmark was the object of the exercise.  George was making his for grandad.  George is a Man City fan and granddad a lifelong Man Utd fan.  The bookmark says MAN C.  The kid has got a sense of humour!

IMG_2989.jpgb

An afternoon a couple of weeks ago was spent with my sweet friend, Vanessa, in the pub overlooking the lake.  oh, drinking only coffee I might add.  The company was great and the scenery was glorious!

IMG_3033.jpgb

And finally, the donkeys.  They continue to delight me every time I walk past their field.  Adorable creatures!

I’ll be back before too long with pics from a recent weekend in Wales.

Little Things Mean a Lot.

I love these little Starbucks Christmas tree decorations but they are a bit pricey so I’ve never bought one.  However, I do have one as of today!

IMG_1790b

My two girls came across them on sale this morning when they went for an early morning coffee together.  They got one each and one for me too.  It’s so very true.  Little things mean a lot.  Thank you Victoria!

A Run Down of the Run Up to Christmas.

Well, my blogging has been very scarce in recent weeks.  A combination of not much to report and not much time to report it in.  Just like everybody else in the run up to Christmas I had plenty of stuff to do which kept me away from the computer.  As well as the usual shopping, cleaning, decking the halls with boughs of holly fa la la la la la la some fun things happened too.

IMG_1587b

Early in December I spent the afternoon with George in his classroom working on a craft project.  The project being a collage based on the Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s album cover.  George’s class had recently been on a field trip to The Beatles’ Museum in Liverpool and had had a whale of a time.  While we worked on the collage a large screen showed the photos from that outing and there was Beatles music playing in the background.  It really was a fun afternoon.

IMG_1598b

At Christmas time I like a glass of sherry, Croft Original Pale Cream Sherry, to be exact.  This was my first one of the season.

IMG_1613b

I collected Charlie from school a couple of times and took him home.  Here he is outside his front door with his Stop Here Santa sign.  Was there ever the slightest chance that Father Christmas would not stop here?  I don’t think so!

IMG_1612b

All three of our little boys have been poorly on and off this month.  The day this photo was taken George wasn’t well.  But, like me, both my daughters are firm believers in the healing powers of fresh air.  A gentle walk on a cold, crisp and dry day.  What could be better to help rid George of his germs?

IMG_1620b

On the 14th I met my lovely cousin, Sylvia, in Manchester.  Our intention was to browse the Continental Christmas Markets.  Sadly the heavens opened early in the morning and never closed again that day so we  briefly skimmed through the market stalls and made a beeline for cosier, cheerier, indoor establishments.

IMG_1622b

Of course we had a couple of pit stops along the way.  This one was in Starbucks on St. Ann’s Square.  We like it there because the markets with all the hustle and bustle are right outside and clearly visible through the windows.  We have been boycotting Starbuck’s because of their UK tax issues but things seem to be getting sorted on that front so our consciences allowed us to give Starbucks our custom once again.  Note how we shared our cakes.  That’s our upbringing showing through.  Sharing was very important in our childhoods.  Our mothers insisted that we shared everything we had.  Quite right too!  My mother called it “wacking”.  I haven’t a clue where that expression originates and I think my mother was the only person who ever used it.  My mother would’ve been happy to know that we had “wacked” a sandwich earlier too.

ChasinHebBdgeCafe14.12b

On the weekend of the 15th Charlie slept over at our house when both his parents were working.  Bright and early on the Sunday morning we took him to our favourite cafe in Hebden Bridge for breakfast.  Ceaseless rain made it impossible to take him to the park or anywhere more suitable but he had a good time drawing in the cafe and we enjoyed it too.

Somewhere round about this time I had a Christmas lunch with my sweet friends and walking partners, Vanessa and Diane. I wish I’d got a pic of them. We had a great afternoon together, laughed and talked nonstop almost ‘til the cows came home. There was also an outing with my lovely friends and neighbours John and Lesley to a different Christmas Market. Another wet and windy freezing cold day and no pictures from that day either.  What’s the matter with me?  I had a camera with me on both of these occasions!

Now onto the 17th and another trip into Manchester.  This time with my daughter Caroline…

Xmas-AfternoonTeaMidland201

… for Christmas Afternoon Tea at The Midland Hotel.  This was my Christmas present from Caroline and Trev and couldn’t have been a more right-up-my-street present.  There was champagne and mulled wine, finger sandwiches, fancy cakes, scones and clotted cream, endless cups of tea and a pianist playing away in the background.  It was a little oasis of calm and tranquility.  Perfect!

IMG_1623b

All good things come to an end and all too soon it was back out onto the wet streets.  This month seems to have been full of nothing but rainy days.

Christmas-theatre-White-Christmas-at-The-Lowry-e1354663353506-472x264

Closer to Christmas now on the 22nd Caroline and I went to the theatre to see Irving Berlin's White Christmas.  What a treat that was.  The  cast was excellent.  The songs familiar.  The tap dancing super duper.  A real crowd pleaser.

Christmas2012Baking-copyb

On the 23rd George and Nicholas came round to make mince pies with me.  I got crafty this year and prepared well for this event.  I measured the ingredients out and shared (or should that be wacked?) them between two bowls and had two rolling pins lined up for the two boys.  This worked out really well and I must remember to do it again next year.  Charlie had been with me on the Friday and we had made fancy cakes together.  All fun stuff and getting closer and closer to Christmas Day.

DSC_7212b

In the afternoon of the 23rd William and I went along to our local park for a carol service.  It was cold, very cold in fact, but dry for once.  The brass band played merrily and the small crowd sang heartily.  We came away with Jingle Bells jingling in our heads.

This Christmas I have been able to “visit” my sister, Maureen, thousands of miles away in her home in Arkansas and see all her family too.  Several times we’ve hooked up and spent time together.  Shown each other our Christmas decorations and seen each other’s happy smiling faces.  All this courtesy of iPhone’s FaceTime (video calling).  Isn’t technology fantastic?!

DSC_7221b

And finally, I just had to take a picture of this pram in the park.  It’s a proper pram!  You don’t see many like this any more.  All babies were pushed around in prams like this when my girls were babies.  I would’ve loved to give this pram a little push but I didn’t know the owners and they might have thought I was bit nutty if I’d asked them if I could please push their baby around the park in that beautiful proper pram!  It is lovely though isn’t it?

Of course I’m writing this a few days after Christmas so it’s too late to wish everyone a Merry Christmas but I do hope that everyone did have a Merry Christmas and that a happy, healthy and peaceful New Year is just around the corner for each and every one of us.

Kathleen.
