The Shepherds Rest, Lumbutts

Just a quick post today.  I’m trying to do better with blogging this year and keep up to date with things.

My other half and I had a lovely day yesterday. We had lunch with our good friends and neighbours John and Lesley at The Shepherds Rest public house up Lumbutts. Lumbutts being a little place, not even a village really, approximately 20 minutes away in the countryside up above Todmorden.  Lumbutts also featured in this post from May last year when Billy and I ventured out with Caroline and Trev to find Gaddings Dam.  The weather was glorious that day and the photos in that post show the beauty of the area.

Yesterday though the weather was inclement to say the least and a better place to be than inside a cosy country pub with a drink in front of you and a fire roaring away beside you would’ve been hard to find.  Add to that a hearty lunch and good company and life was sweet.

Another pic of the inside of the pub from that other post...  no fire needed that day.

Time is at it Again!

Flying that is.  Already it’s the 26th of January and before anybody can say Jack Robinson February will be here!  Oh well, nothing to be done about it so we’d better just hold on and enjoy the ride.

Jan2014collage

  1. I snapped a selfie of me wearing my new jumper, a Christmas present from Caroline and Trev.  I really like it!  The jumper that is.
  2. George stayed over early in the month and I took him to Hebden Bridge for lunch.  Pretty Christmas lights were still in evidence.
  3. George snuggled up to grandad on the couch.  These two pics are in the wrong order this should have been before the last one.
  4. John and Lesley came round a couple of Saturday nights ago.  We played Rummikub.  I love that game and happily I won that night.  We always have a good time together and conversation flows over the game along with a glass or two of good cheer.
  5. A week last Monday Lesley rang to invite me out for a walk through Ealees with her and John.  The weather was not good but it didn’t matter in the least.   If we waited for the sun to shine we might never set foot outside the door from one blue moon to the next!  Not that rotten weather is going to be a problem for John and Lesley for the next couple of months.  The very next day they jetted off to New Zealand!
  6. However there have been a few good weather days.  When Caroline’s shifts allow she often rings to see if I’d like to join her for a walk and sometimes we do catch a glimpse of that blue sky we know is up there somewhere.
  7. Charlie stayed overnight last week and here he is reading his school book to grandad.
  8. What else but pancakes for breakfast the morning after.  He says my pancakes are awesome!
  9. A Sunday morning treat.  A cup of tea with my Kindle in bed.  Love it!

And finally a portrait of Nicholas.  I posted lots in the last post of Nicholas trying not to laugh while I read him jokes from a book.  This is another taken at the same time.   Cute, eh?

Until next time,

Beetham Nurseries and Village.

One of the reasons why we enjoyed our recent week at Bay View was the fact that John and Lesley came up to visit for a day.

Naturally we showed them around Bay View and started the day off with the walk to and brunch at Archer’s Cafe and for some reason I don’t have a picture of that.  It was a very good start to the day though.

After which we took our visitors on a leisurely drive showing them the beautiful countryside around Bay View.   The scenery above, which isn’t far at all from Bay View, really, really pleases me.  I feast my eyes on it every time we pass it.

Later on in the day we found our way to Beetham Nurseries.  In my book this wonderful place has everything a self respecting garden centre should have.  The variety of plants, trees, shrubs et cetera is vast, varied and so colourful.  It’s such a pleasure to stroll around the grounds and then sit outside the very good cafe and admire it all.

Looking at all the alpine type plants.  Plenty of them to choose from.  I hemmed and hawed quite a bit over these plants but finally made my choice.

It had to be a Hen and Chicks.  I love these succulent plants and I’m just hoping that this specimen stays as healthy in the long run as it was the day we bought it.  Fingers crossed.

The picture above makes me laugh.  John and William look like two miserable naughty little boys sitting on the naughty step!  I can guarantee that if the naughty step had been around when they were little the pair of them would’ve spent a lot of time on it!

From the garden centre it was just a quick hop, skip and a jump to Beetham village in the centre of which is the 12th century church.

I’ll bet this very pretty pergola has featured in many a wedding photograph.

Walking further into the village we came across the village stocks.  My beloved looks right at home up there don’t you think?

I’m so glad John and Lesley came up to visit.  We always enjoy their company and now that they know where we are I’m hoping they’ll visit again… and again!

Until next time,
